What is Google Maps?

Google Maps is a desktop and mobile web based mapping service provided by Google. Google adds data to their Primary Database on a regular basis, and Google Maps also help as a route planner when travelling by foot or car, thus helping millions of users all across the world. Google Maps also offers street maps, satellite imagery and Street View.

Google Maps forms part of the Google Earth software for PC, and there is no free-standing download link for Google Maps alone other than for mobile devices.

Downloading Google Maps/Earth:

We begin by opening the Internet Explorer browser and typing in the address bar http://www.google.com once the Google page has loaded, on the search box of Google type in “Google Earth Download” and click on “ Google Search”. The first link in the search results will be “http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html‎”. Clicking that link will take you to the download page where you have to make the necessary selections, i.e. whether you want to include Google Chrome with the download of Google Earth or not. Tick or un-tick according to your preference and then click the “Agree and Download” button. This is used by many users consistently and this is why Google remains a favourite for many people across the globe.

That will cause a window to pop up with the option to save the file. You will notice that the file size will be very small which is less than 1MB and it is because it is a web based installer that will require an internet connection in order to download the actual software.

Once this small installation file has downloaded, make sure you are connected to the internet and double click the file and the Google Earth Installer window will pop-up to check if you are connected to the internet and only then will the download of the installation begin. The time required to download the setup will depend on the speed of your internet connection.

Once it has completed the download, the window will show “Installation complete”, you will then click the “Close” box in the bottom right corner of the window,

A window will pop up asking if you want to run the file and then you can click “Run”. Then the installation window will pop-up saying “Installing” this may take a while depending on your computer and internet speed. Once it completes the Google Earth program will open with a pop-up window which will show you start-up tips and how to navigate through Google Earth. You can un-tick the check box on the bottom of the tips screen so that it doesn’t pop-up with tips every time you use Google Earth. Once you are done with the start-up tips window click “Close” at the bottom.

You now have Google Earth/Maps installed on your computer.
